A personal illustration project depicting a timeline of Hollywood cinema, through the medium of the iconic characters and settings within it.
Featuring over 150 unique characters and nine landscape environments stretching from the industry’s early days in the 1920s, all the way to the blockbuster-filled present.
Character
The character were illustrated in simple geometric style- one that could be repeated the hundreds of times necessary for the piece- while ensuring that they stayed recognisable as the source material.
Bold colours maintain the playfulness of the design, while the thick, sharp shading lines add depth and movement.
Vehicles vary in level of detail depending on their size and distance from the foreground. Perspective is sometimes added to further increase the depth in the piece.
Environments
Each landscape was initially created to be ‘empty’- that is without the influence of the film characters. Iconic landmarks from around the world were chosen, or locations made famous by specific films.
Some elements were added to bring life to the locations, such as extra detail for statues and masonry. These include film specific features.
The characters and vehicles were then finally brought in to populate the piece.
Combining the backgrounds into one continuous landscape created the panoramic scene that I was aiming for. The final stage was incorporating all of the film characters into the world, which brought the whole piece to life.
